Letter to Americans from Iran’s President

Posted by the United National Anti-War Coalition (UNAC, in the USA) in an e-notice on April 10, 2026. UNAC writes, “Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sent an open letter to the People of the US hours before Donald Trump’s unhinging and dangerous speech on April 2 in which he threatened to bomb Iran back to the Stone Age.  President Pezeshkian’s letter is below.”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s letter to the American People

4/2/26

In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

To the people of the United States of America, and to all those who, amid a flood of distortions and manufactured narratives, continue to seek the truth and aspire to a better life:

Iran—by this very name, character, and identity—is one of the oldest continuous civilizations in human history. Despite its historical and geographical advantages at various times, Iran has never, in its modern history, chosen the path of aggression, expansion, colonialism, or domination. Even after enduring occupation, invasion, and sustained pressure from global powers—and despite possessing military superiority over many of its neighbors—Iran has never initiated a war. Yet it has resolutely and bravely repelled those who have attacked it.

The Iranian people harbor no enmity toward other nations, including the people of America, Europe, or neighboring countries. Even in the face of repeated foreign interventions and pressures throughout their proud history, Iranians have consistently drawn a clear distinction between governments and the people they govern. This is a deeply rooted principle in Iranian culture and collective consciousness—not a temporary political stance.

For this reason, portraying Iran as a threat is neither consistent with historical reality nor with present-day observable facts. Such a perception is the product of political and economic whims of the powerful—the need to manufacture an enemy in order to justify pressure, maintain military dominance, sustain the arms industry, and control strategic markets. In such an environment, if a threat does not exist, it is invented.

Within this same framework, the United States has concentrated the largest number of its forces, bases, and military capabilities around Iran—a country that, at least since the founding of the United States, has never initiated a war. Recent American acts of aggression launched from these very bases have demonstrated how threatening such a military presence truly is. Naturally, no country confronted with such conditions would forgo strengthening its defensive capabilities. What Iran has done—and continues to do—is a measured response grounded in legitimate self-defense, and by no means an initiation of war or aggression.

Relations between Iran and the United States were not originally hostile, and early interactions between the Iranian and American people were not marred with hostility or tension. The turning point, however, was the 1953 coup d’état—an illegal American intervention aimed at preventing the nationalization of Iran’s own resources. That coup disrupted Iran’s democratic process, reinstated dictatorship, and sowed deep distrust among Iranians toward U.S. policies. This distrust deepened further with America’s support for the Shah’s regime, its backing of Saddam Hussein during the imposed war of the 1980s, the imposition of the longest and most comprehensive sanctions in modern history, and ultimately, unprovoked military aggression—twice, in the midst of negotiations—against Iran.

Yet all these pressures have failed to weaken Iran. On the contrary, the country has grown stronger in many areas: literacy rates have tripled—from roughly 30% before the Islamic Revolution to over 90% today; higher education has expanded dramatically; significant advances have been achieved in modern technology; healthcare services have improved; and infrastructure has developed at a pace and scale incomparable to the past. These are measurable, observable realities that stand independent of fabricated narratives.

At the same time, the destructive and inhumane impact of sanctions, war, and aggression on the lives of the resilient Iranian people must not be underestimated. The continuation of military aggression and recent bombings profoundly affect people’s lives, attitudes, and perspectives. This reflects a fundamental human truth: when war inflicts irreparable harm on lives, homes, cities, and futures, people will not remain indifferent toward those responsible.

This raises a fundamental question: Exactly which of the American people’s interests are truly being served by this war? Was there any objective threat from Iran to justify such behavior? Does the massacre of innocent children, the destruction of cancer-treatment pharmaceutical facilities, or boasting about bombing a nation back to the Stone Age serve any purpose other than further damaging the United States’ global standing?

Iran pursued negotiations, reached an agreement, and fulfilled all its commitments. The decision to withdraw from that agreement, escalate toward confrontation, and launch two acts of aggression in the midst of negotiations were destructive choices made by the U.S. government—choices that served the delusions of a foreign aggressor.

Attacking Iran’s vital infrastructure—including energy and industrial facilities—directly targets the Iranian people. Beyond constituting a war crime, such actions carry consequences that extend far beyond Iran’s borders. They generate instability, increase human and economic costs, and perpetuate cycles of tension, planting seeds of resentment that will endure for years. This is not a demonstration of strength; it is a sign of strategic bewilderment and an inability to achieve a sustainable solution.

Is it not also the case that America has entered this aggression as a proxy for Israel, influenced and manipulated by that regime? Is it not true that Israel, by manufacturing an Iranian threat, seeks to divert global attention away from its crimes toward the Palestinians? Is it not evident that Israel now aims to fight Iran to the last American soldier and the last American taxpayer dollar—shifting the burden of its delusions onto Iran, the region, and the United States itself in pursuit of illegitimate interests?

Is “America First” truly among the priorities of the U.S. government today?

I invite you to look beyond the machinery of misinformation—an integral part of this aggression—and instead speak with those who have visited Iran. Observe the many accomplished Iranian immigrants—educated in Iran—who now teach and conduct research at the world’s most prestigious universities, or contribute to some of the most advanced technology firms in the West. Do these realities align with the distortions you are being told about Iran and its people?

Today, the world stands at a crossroads. Continuing along the path of confrontation is more costly and futile than ever before. The choice between confrontation and engagement is both real and consequential; its outcome will shape the future for generations to come. Throughout its millennia of proud history, Iran has outlasted many aggressors. All that remains of them are tarnished names in history, while Iran endures—resilient, dignified, and proud.

The Heroic Struggle in West Asia

THE HEROIC PEOPLES’ STRUGGLE WILL DEFEAT THE US-ZIONIST-TURKISH ONSLAUGHT ON WEST ASIA

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle salutes the brave sacrifice and resistance of the Palestinian and Lebanese people and condemns the expansion of regional conflict into Syria by imperialist and fascist proxy forces. As the genocidal US-Zionist-Turkish alliance unleashes wave upon wave of attacks against the people, we remain steadfast in our solidarity with all progressive forces in the region as US imperialism lets loose its attack dogs to slow its inevitable decline.

After many months of sacrifice by the Lebanese people, in which Hezbollah’s declared “support front” for the Palestinian resistance in Gaza was turned into its own front for the defense of Lebanese sovereignty, the resistance agreed to a ceasefire with the Zionist entity. This deal was brought to the table after the Zionists were unable to achieve any of their objectives in Lebanon despite indiscriminately killing well over 3,000 people in the country since October 7, 2023, including some of Hezbollah’s key leaders like the late Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. The settlers to the north of occupied Palestine have not been able to return home despite the hollow promises of the Zionist government. Hezbollah also proved that its attacks could hit deep into Tel Aviv, destroying military sites and forcing settlers to flee to shelters on a daily basis. The Lebanese resistance remains strong, and they now have the hard won space to recuperate to carry on their fight. In fact, it has already been reported that the Zionists committed at least 50 violations of the ceasefire through continued missile attacks, shooting at civilians including journalists, and preventing Lebanese people from returning to their homes.

Regardless of how long the ceasefire lasts due to Zionist provocations, it is clear that the Zionists knew they would expend too many resources in a war in Lebanon while the genocide in Gaza is still taking place, and they saw that the resistance would not back down, nor were they losing support among the people. Instead, the US special envoy to Lebanon pressured the Zionists into making a deal due to the unwavering strength of the resistance. This sacrifice of the people in their fight for liberation is as much an inspiration as the fight of the Palestinian people, and the entire region shines bright in the beacon of their resistance.

As the Lebanon ceasefire was reaching its start, a new reactionary wave was unleashed on Syria from Turkey. Terrorist mercenaries trained by Turkey and armed with US-made weapons stormed through Syria’s Idlib Province and reached Aleppo within just a few days. These mercenaries belong to the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a reorganized fragment of the previous US-trained and al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front whose majority membership would go on to form the Islamic State terrorist organization, as well as the so-called Syrian National Army, made up of former fighters of the Free Syrian Army, a group armed and trained by the US and Turkey and financed by US-provided funds. Their sole purpose was to take advantage of the Arab Spring in which people across West Asia and North Africa took to the streets to demand an end to political repression and economic crisis, and to inflame a civil war to topple the Bashar al-Assad regime that stood in opposition to US imperialism in the region and is a close ally of US rival Russia.

The destructive path cut through Idlib and into Aleppo by these US-Turkish and pro-Zionist mercenaries exposes their anti-people interests and false claims of wanting to free the Syrian people from repression. They have ambushed civilians and beheaded soldiers and civilians alike. They have blockaded key roads such as the highway to Damascus, which has led to hamletting of communities and cut them off from food and aid. They have enacted indiscriminate violence against national minorities such as the Kurds. It is clear from these actions that these forces are mere proxies for Turkey as the fascist Erdogan regime seeks to take advantage of the chaotic genocidal war of the Zionists and stave off internal crisis at home while enacting its own genocidal war of extermination against the Kurdish people fighting for their national liberation. It also took advantage of a key moment when Russia, Syria’s key military ally, is mired in its proxy war with US-NATO forces that the US provoked to weaken Russia in Ukraine.

In summary, the outstanding heroic performance of the resistance both in Gaza and Lebanon, which prevented Israel from realizing its declared objectives of its war has forced Imperialism to unleash its plan B in order to cut all routes which might be used to reinforce all needed resources in this decisive war. Turkish military forces and its puppets in Northern Syria as well as US agent forces were used to execute their plot to force the Syrian regime to cut relations with the Palestinian and Lebanese resistance or be in danger of being internally defeated and the Syrian nation and state to be partitioned and disintegrate into warring groups. This plot is being now defeated by the awareness of the Syrian people and the steadfastness of the Syrian army and its allies in the battlefield.

The war is escalating in Syria, yet the balance of forces is moving in the right direction against the Imperialists, the Zionists and the Turkish regime. As US imperialism wages its violent strategy to counter its ultimate regional rival Iran by letting loose its puppet and satellite states against the people and independent states of the region, let us remain patient and steadfast in struggle as the people, the true makers of history, fight on to free themselves from imperialism and all reaction. Their resistance is a beacon to our own resistance, and our solidarity in the midst of our own struggles for liberation is the greatest gift we can offer.

AGAINST GENOCIDE, FOR LIBERATION AND RETURN

11 November 2023, International Critical Geographies Group

As geographers, scholars, activists, organisers, artists, workers and communities committed to social justice, we refuse to remain silent in the face of Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people and we stand in unwavering solidarity with Palestine. We condemn the Israeli slaughter, displacement, imprisonment, and dehumanization of Palestinian life, from the river to the sea. This brutal offensive is being carried out with the complicity of governments across the Global North and South, and it is a textbook case of collective punishment and genocide in violation of international conventions on war and human rights.

As the Israeli offensive in Gaza enters its second month, we are horrified by and condemn the more than 11,000 Palestinians murdered and 25,000 others injured and maimed; 1.5 million people displaced; the ruination of half of the total residential homes as well as the destruction of hospitals, universities, schools and places of worship, the destruction of vital infrastructure such as water and energy ahead of winter, and the destruction of farms, livestock, soils and biodiversity, with long-lasting ecological consequences. Equally, we condemn the escalated siege imposed by Israel and Egypt, which cut off Palestinians from water, food, medical supplies, electricity, fuel, and communications in violation of international humanitarian law.

We are deeply concerned about Palestinians in the West Bank. Israel has imposed a lockdown further depriving them of freedom of movement and vital access to supplies, services and livelihoods. Since the war erupted, 176 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli army and settler militias. Another two thousand have been arrested and a thousand more have been forcibly displaced from their lands. Daily raids by the Israeli army terrorize the population and destroy critical infrastructures in cities and refugee camps across the West Bank. Palestinians in Jerusalem and those who are citizens of Israel are being arrested, dismissed from their jobs, legally prosecuted and threatened for expressing solidarity with their kin. Israel is also holding more than ten thousand Palestinian political prisoners in appalling conditions who, as documented by several human rights groups, are suffering from beatings, tortures, medicine withdrawals and death in custody.

Despite the unprecedented intensity and scale of the current violence and devastation, these Israeli attacks are in no way new. Before October 7th, 179 Palestinians had been killed and 683 injured by Israelis in 2023 alone, making it the deadliest year in two decades. This latest Israeli attack is the 6th large scale assault on Gaza since Israel imposed a siege in 2006. There is a long history of Palestinian dispossession at play here. For more than a century, Palestinians have endured the criminal violence of imperialism, settler colonialism, and apartheid. This has been thoroughly and painstakingly documented in scholarship, civil society reports and UN resolutions, Palestinians do not exist in a vacuum.

All life is sacred. We also recognize that the violence of the oppressed is a response to the condition of their oppression. However as indicated by the International Court of Justice in 2004, Israel’s right to self-defense is not applicable in the context of their colonial occupation. Equally, according to UN Resolution 2625, Palestinians have a legitimate right to resist colonial domination, apartheid and foreign occupation by all available means, within the boundaries of international law.

We reject any and all conflation of criticism of the Israeli state or Zionism with anti-Semitism. The accusation of antisemitism, particularly the new definition by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), has proven to be an effective means to silence and punish critics of Israel. False charges of antisemitism have been levied against academics and civil rights activists calling attention to the plight of Palestinians. We recognize anti-Zionism as a legitimate stance against a nationalist, settler colonial and racist political movement and ideology premised on the subjugation, dispossession and erasure of Palestinians. We refuse to be part of a weaponization of antisemitism which tears apart communities and a united front against all forms of racism.

We denounce the increasing governmental, institutional and legislative criminalisation of those who express solidarity with and demand accountability for the violation of Palestinian’s rights in all countries. Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States are leading the charge in sanctioning, silencing, incarcerating and punishing those who speak out against their complicity, and their financial, military and political support of Israel. We warn that this backlash will become a boomerang. The curtailment of the basic rights to protest, organize, associate, speak and think as well as the ongoing deplatforming of scholars, artists, activists and workers is a violation of our basic rights and responsibilities to speak, write and disseminate the historical truth. This repression may have a chilling effect on our individual and collective freedoms to speak and organize for social justice but it will not stop us.

We condemn the unprecedented corporate censorship, alarming levels of disinformation and hate speech across traditional and social media platforms which are dehumanizing, targeting and silencing Palestinian voices through unethical and biased reporting, discriminatory content moderation and shadow banning.

We salute Palestinian parents, frontline health workers, journalists, bakers, fisherfolk, infrastructure maintainers and all workers and carers who are enduring and resisting the everyday horrors of genocide.

We salute the hundreds of thousands taking to the streets across the Global South and North in internationalist solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for liberation. Equally, we stand with all forms of labor organizing, protests and direct actions which are targeting the logistical infrastructures and supply chains that enable the imperial war machine, from the blocking of ships, planes and trains to the disruption of the military industrial complex.

We also see and take inspiration from the courage of migrant, diasporic and exiled communities who are organizing and speaking out against the genocide in Palestine despite the risks of arrest, suspension of resident permits, home raids and deportation.

In heeding the urgent call for solidarity from our Palestinian allies and joining millions globally, we demand an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that puts an end to the killings, displacements and destruction of Palestinian people, places and homes by the Israeli government.

We demand an end to the genocide against the Palestinian people, from the river to the sea. We call for accountability for the crimes of the State of Israel and its financiers, enablers and allies. Never again means never again, for Palestinians and everyone without exception.

We reject a return to the previous everyday violent status quo and demand an end to settler colonial occupation and apartheid for the implementation of the inalienable Palestinian rights to self-determination and return.

Drawing on the International Critical Geographies Group’ statement of purpose “A World to Win!” and on the 2015 resolution passed in Ramallah during the 7th ICCG, we call on geographers, scholars, activists, artists, organizers, workers and people of conscience to reinvigorate internationalist efforts to implement the Palestinian call to promote boycotts, divestments, and economic sanctions against Israel until it complies with international law.

Finally, we call on colleagues and comrades to mobilize against the criminalisation and censorship of all things Palestinian which have turned our institutions, academic or otherwise, into spaces of intimidation and fear. We call on you to continue speaking up, to organise in your workplaces through unionizing, direct actions, statements, dialogues, teach-ins, screenings as well as collaboration with and support of our Palestinian colleagues until we put an end to the genocide and Palestine is free.
