Wage Peoples’ Struggle for Just and Lasting Peace!Statement of the ILPS on the occasion of International Peace Day, in Collaboration with the ILPS Commission on Just Peace (Commission 4) The International League of Peoples’ Struggle marks International Peace Day with rage and condemnation at the gross violations of peace, sovereignty, and livelihood from imperialist wars of aggression and fascist counterinsurgency campaigns being waged on behalf of imperialism all around the world. Instead of peace, the apologists of the imperialist system give us nothing but more misery and war. It is through the courageous struggles of the people erupting for national liberation in numerous countries today that will truly pave the way towards just and lasting peace in a world where imperialism has been defeated.

US imperialism has completely shed any pretenses of peace or adherence to international humanitarian law. Forty-five years since September 21 was declared by the United Nations in 1981 as the “International Day of Peace,” the world is now besieged by multiple ongoing wars due to imperialist aggression that has aggravated widespread economic crisis. In the last year since the previous International Peace Day 2025, even more wars and invasions have been initiated by the US.

Venezuela was blatantly invaded by the US on January 3, 2026, in an operation that the US said would bring “peace and stability” to the country. This came after years of US economic sanctions crippled the economy and deprived the Venezuelan of basic goods such as food, medicine, and building materials. The US kidnapped President Maduro and First Combatant Flores while killing as many as 100 Venezuelans and 32 Cubans stationed in the country. Today, the US enacts a de facto occupation of the country as it seeks to extract its oil reserves and cut it off from supporting Cuba. Cuba is under one of the harshest blockades in the entire history of US intervention against the island. Since January 29, 2026, energy, food, and money transfers have been almost fully cut off by the US, leading to regular blackouts, shut-downs of hospitals where newborns and sick patients are put at risk of death, and forcing many institutions such as schools and government operations to limit their services. While the US callously suffocates the Cuban people, it ensures that its infamous military base and prison on Guantanamo Bay remains fully active as it tortures prisoners without charge and remains a staging ground for US wars in the Western Hemisphere. The US continues to bomb Iran since the US-Zionist war was launched on February 28, 2026. At least 3,468 people have been reported killed and over 26,500 injured according to the Iranian Ministry of Health. The US has primarily targeted civilian infrastructure with Trump threatening to blow up “every bridge and power plant” in order to “wipe out an entire civilization” in Iran. The US has also attempted to blockade the Strait of Hormuz as a means to economically harm Iran, but has instead contributed to the global rise in oil, fertilizer, and other prices. In Zionist-occupied Palestine, the so-called “Board of Peace,” launched on January 22, 2026, has refused to implement any of its promises for the people of Gaza. Since the October 2025 ceasefire was signed between “Israel” and the Palestinian resistance, there have been 4,889 documented “Israeli” violations leading to at least 1,381 Palestinians killed and at least 4,757 wounded, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. This is on top of the over 73,000 documented deaths in Gaza since the genocide began, which more likely equals around 200,000 when the number of missing under the rubble is factored in. The Board of Peace promised to ensure humanitarian access to Gaza, yet only 34.9% of the agreed humanitarian and commercial truck flow has entered, and only 39.3% of the scheduled crossings from Rafah have been allowed. Approximately 34 square kilometers remain occupied by Zionist forces with more homes being demolished daily despite reports of “reconstruction” from the Board. Gaza is one of the most glaring examples of how the word “peace” can be weaponized by the forces of imperialism in their attempts to hide a genocide of their own making. In addition to Gaza, the genocide also continues in the West Bank, where nearly 5,000 settler attacks have occurred so far in 2026 alone. This comes as the Zionist government openly arms settlers and encourages fascist frenzies of violence and pogroms against Palestinians akin to the Nazi pogroms against Jews in 1930s Germany. Over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, with at least 250 villages affected by the burning of homes, cars, and farmland. August alone saw over 20,000 olive trees uprooted while over 120,000 square meters of cropland were destroyed in March. Despite the UN officially passing a resolution to end the Zionist occupation of the West Bank in September 2024, its own celebration of International Peace Day today is done with this resolution still failing to be implemented. In Ukraine, the US and NATO-backed Ukrainian military continues to fight against Russian troops stationed in Ukrainian land while also firing drones deep into Russian territory. Both Ukrainian and Russian civilians have been affected, with Ukrainian communities being most impacted by this devastating NATO proxy war. According to the UN’s own estimates, hundreds of thousands of military personnel and over 16,000 civilians have been killed since the war began in February 2022. The conflict has remained relatively frozen in terms of land claimed by Ukrainians and Russian forces with Russia offering a peace agreement in exchange for territory concessions in the Russian-speaking regions of Ukraine and a promise for Ukraine to not join NATO, to which Ukraine and its imperialist backers in the US and EU have pushed back against, promising even more arms transfers in the months to come. The vast amount of critical mineral reserves and agricultural land of Ukraine are greatly sought after by Western monopoly corporations. Throughout the Asia and Pacific region, the US military continues to expand its military bases and conduct joint military exercises in its quest to contain its rival China. This expansion of military forces brings violence to communities living around bases or where exercises take place, especially against women, as the land is polluted by chemical spills and spent munitions. There are approximately 375,000 US troops stationed in this region, especially across Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, and India. The US military presence and weapons sales to the ruling regimes in this region also prop up fascist states and give fuel to the fire for counterinsurgency campaigns by bureaucrat capitalists and big landlords in power. Each of these US-led wars, and the preparations for further war, are all in line with the imperialist drive for profits. The International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group (IMF-WBG) salivate at each new war, as it provides new forms of investment on the ruins of scorched land and destroyed livelihoods, such as funding the aforementioned “Board of Peace.” Corporate capture schemes such as Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs) and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) prey on war-torn economies to displace farmers from their land, deliberately hold back development for cost-cutting, uproot local economies that traditionally empower women, and push the toiling masses to undertake the most unsafe and undignified forms of labor or migrate abroad. There can be no peace until the people are freed from the shackles of forced starvation wages, forced migration and bonded labour. The immiseration of the masses is itself an act of unending war. While the UN issues yet another statement calling on the people of the world to put down their arms and imagine a world without conflict, this seemingly ideal utopia of peace becomes even more insulting and hollow to the millions of people living at the forefront of imperialist attacks with no substantial pathway being offered to end the root causes of their conflicts. The root causes of war lie in the imperialist system itself, and the monopoly capitalist drive for critical minerals, oil, trade routes, finance deals, land for AI data centers, and other means for capital export. Rather than presenting any long-term solution that would lead to the end of war and conflict around the world, the UN’s messages on International Peace Day have the opposite effect, shielding the instigators of conflict and giving them a free hand to continue stoking war, occupation, theft, and genocide with no end in sight. Any calls for just and lasting peace in the world must recognize that the imperialists and fascists will refuse to give up their arms at any cost, so they must also recognize the just struggles of the people to resist imperialism by building their own strength of arms. As the ILPS states in its primer on Wars of Imperialism and Resistance released today: [The peoples’ movement for peace] can only be successful if it utilizes a broad range of tactics, taking full advantage of all forms of struggle where they exist, to expose and oppose the imperialists through mass democratic means. But the repressive laws of fascist and war-making states ensure that these just tactics are made illegal and crushed mercilessly. Therefore, mass movements for peace have a natural stake in offering moral and political support to the forces directly confronting the imperialists and their puppet proxies on the field of battle. Genuine peace is not merely the momentary absence of conflict, nor is it the absence of open war in the shadow of imperialist exploitation and suffering of the masses of the world’s people. When speaking of just and lasting peace, it must be paired with social, economic, and political justice alongside solidarity amongst peoples. This includes the right to self-determination, economic self-reliance, food sovereignty, and self-defense of nations and oppressed peoples from reactionary aggression and violence. People’s war is waged for the realization of these just people’s aspirations. While imperialist war is waged for the benefit of the few in the ruling class to profit off the resources and labor of the masses of the world, people’s wars of resistance are waged to end the untold suffering and death that imperialist war and all forms of capitalist and feudal exploitation bring in their wake. These resistance wars are alive today in Ansar Allah’s recent victories against Saudi-backed militias, expanding the liberated territory of Yemen. Iran’s defensive strikes against US-Zionist aggression have destroyed much of the US military infrastructure across West Asia, forcing the US to pull its troops back from the war that it started. The Palestinian resistance maintains its rightful and just authority to resist the genocidal Zionist occupation, refusing to give up its arms until the Zionists are expelled and a united Palestinian government is established. People’s wars continue to gain strength in the Philippines, West Papua, and Colombia, and despite unimaginable repression under the fascist Operation Kagaar, the people’s war in India refuses to give up its fight. On this 2026 so-called “International Peace Day” marked by the UN to pacify resistance and protect imperialist interests, the ILPS acknowledges that peoples’ struggles of the masses and wars of resistance are the only path towards ending imperialist war and fascist repression. The League salutes all of those who militantly fight for land, liberation, sovereignty, and a peace that is both just and lasting.
